I admit that I'm not the greatest Flash designer out there. However, I enjoy using Flash and am intrigued by all it has to offer. I'd love to be given the chance to experiment with it and see if it can provide a solution for any project.

Thank You

UNC Chapel Hill School of Nursing e-Thank You Card
The Advancement Office approached me in Spring 2007 about creating an online thank you card for donors. The Office had seen several examples on other college websites and wanted to create something similar. I scanned the older black and white photos into Photoshop, and manipulated them to have a softer, sepia tone. I inserted these and other digital pictures into Flash. The music was ripped from a 1950s-era record, so the quality is not perfect, but we decided to use it because it's of the School of Nursing Choir. At the end of the card, users can choose to email the URL to a friend, or replay from the beginning.

This card was emailed to hundreds of School of Nursing alumni, and has generated a lot of positive feedback.

Jeopardy

UNC Chapel Hill School of Nursing Jeopardy
In early 2007, a faculty member came to me with a request to create an online Jeopardy-style game for her class. At the time, she was using a large corkboard with paper questions that she carted around campus. An online game would not only be easier for the faculty member to transport, but it would also be available for students to play outside of class.

The category titles and questions are imported via an XML file. This makes it easy to swap out one set of questions for another. The timer attached to each question is Actionscript-based.

Future plans for the game include an automated scoring system and the ability to choose between 2 and 4 teams.

Pie Chart

Time Pie Chart
The CITES team and I were given the task of creating a recruitment web site for adult learners who are considering going back to school part time. We intend to provide several interactive components to retain the viewers' interest. One such component is a pie chart. The viewer can enter up to eight tasks, as well as the percentage of time spent on each. The goal is to display how they spend their time visually, and to help the viewer determine whether their responsibilities can be shifted to accommodate going back to school.

Actionscript was used to create the mathematical functions that display each portion of the pie chart.

Sexual Reproductive Health Across the Lifespan
I was approached by a faculty member at the UNC Chapel Hill School of Nursing about designing creative modules for one of her courses. The purpose was to present information in an eye-catching way and to (hopefully) retain the students' attention.

Each tab in this filing cabinet opens a page with basic information, objectives for each section, and links for further reading.

The information on each page is imported and displayed via an XML file and Actionscript.

GI System

The Digestive System
The faculty member who asked me to create the reproductive health module liked it so much, she subsequently asked me to create a second module about the digestive system. When the user clicks on an organ, more information appears to the left. This information is imported via an XML file and Actionscript.

The Autonomic Nervous System

The Autonomic Nervous System
The same faculty member who asked me to create the above two modules also asked me to create a third module about the autonomic nervous system. Each segment of the "neuron" opens a pop-up window with more information.

Dedication Day Slideshow
UNC Chapel Hill's School of Nursing completed an addition to their building in April 2005, and held a celebration called Dedication Day. Faculty, staff, students and alumni came to the commemoration. I created this slideshow using Flash and XML. The XML file lists the location of the pictures and their accompanying captions, and this file is loaded into the Flash slideshow "skin." This method was much easier than importing each picture into Flash and created a caption for it, and it will be easier to update in the future. Instead of opening the Flash native file, all I have to do is add a line of code to the XML file. It was my first experience using XML with Flash, and my coworkers and I were pleased with the results.

Resources & Links Menu

Resources & Links Menu
CITES decided that a complete reorganization of the Resources & Links section of their web site was in order, and I was tapped to do it. Before I created this menu, the viewer was greeted with a long page full of links and text. I wanted to create something that was not only nice to look at, but did away with the boring page of text.

With the redesign of the CITES web site, this menu is no longer being used. To see it in the context of the old site, click here.

Algorithm

Interactive Diagnostic Algorithm for Anxiety Disorders
This feature was designed for the Anxiety Disorder section of MentalHealthCME.com. Its flow chart design allows the user to answer several questions regarding a patient's health, and it in turn provides a likely diagnosis.

Screening Instruments

Screening Instruments for Social Anxiety Disorder
This feature provides information on several screening instruments for social anxiety disorder, selected for their format and usefulness in primary care. It can be seen in the Anxiety section of MentalHealthCME.com.

Test Your Knowledge

Test Your Knowledge: Seven Cases
This is a multiple-choice feature that I developed for the Anxiety courses on MentalHealthCME.com. The user can select a case, then after reading the patient's information, can select from a list of potential conditions. The user is notified immediately if their answer was correct or incorrect.

Lungs
Lungs2

Lungs Graphics
These two animations are featured in TobaccoFreePatients.com, and they illustrate what happens when one quits and does not quit smoking. The first image shows the lungs clearing up post-quit. The second shows the creation of lung spots and tumors if the patients does not quit.

Kicking the Habit

Kicking the Habit
This animation was done for TobaccoFreePatients.com. It's just a basic movie showing a cigarette being flung into a garbage can.

Readiness to Change

TPA Realty
This animated slideshow provides pictures and links of various homes sold by TPA Realty in Tuxedo, NY.
